Let's face it, normal Death Note mode without a mode has a few issues, which is why Shinigami mode had been created.
But, normal Death Note mode is voted at times. I hope with this guide you can make the most out of the mode affectionately nicknamed "metanote" while having fun.
Basic information:
When Death Note mode begins we are torn regarding what each individual character knows and fight within ourselves where the limit between what we know and what is metagame. To clarify things I am making a list of what we know.
1. It is at least clear Kira exists and this night's death is linked to Kira and you should avoid giving out your name as warned by the announcement system.
In general it is clear if your name is given out you may die. therefore, you have right to act suspicious/ feel threatened/ so forth if someone casually says your real name.
2. Based on the role description the detective DOES NOT know shinigami eyes exists.
3. Every character knows of Kira. They know Kira kills criminals with heart attacks. The announcement made this clear by making a reference to the "Kira case" meaning every person hearing the announcement would know what Kira case means, otherwise it would have been explained further.
4. No student should feel threatened if they see someone writing in a book, nor do they have any reason to be suspicious if a person writes on a page, the exception being if a role notices someone write. After all, it's common for some people to have journals/ doodle/ take down notes for various reasons.
5. Even if a none role sees a Death Note on a player in a search/ finds it on a corpse, you have no reason to act too suspicious or want to claim it. After all, some people make joke books all the time. For all you know the Death Note may just be a normal notebook with a unique design. Even if you pick up a Death Note, you would not know right away it works. It would take at least one experiment from an average player.
In other words: if you knock someone out and steal a death note and wallet right away to kill them, it's random kill unless they told you directly how the death note works. Even if you are fighting for your life having been threatened by Kira, if you knock Kira out your goal should be to keep attacking, using a knife or something, not steal whatever items it has to run away to inspect it. If you do happen to knock Kira out taking the Death note and after continuing attacking is still valid. After all, it was an unusual book on a killer, but your goal overall is to beat/ defeat Kira if Kira did show intent to kill you and as far as you know your weapons is your only defense against him.

Roles/ None roles, and how to have fun without metagaming or ruining anyone else's fun:
Basic Student Role - This is just a casual student. And most of you think you may as well have been screwed over if you have no role. That is not the case! What you do can help solve the Kira case, help Kira get away clean, or allow you to stay alive avoiding conflicts and finding fun rp.
As a normal student to have fun you first must eliminate your fear. Some people may try to play dead or hide in a vent all round hoping not to be seen by Shinigami eyes in order to live. Where is the fun in not talking to a single person? There is no life without motion or interaction. If you hide or fake dead the entire round, you may as well have starticided and wasted a slot. Even if there is a chance of death, it's better to get out there and have fun. Just know shit happens, you may die but you may as well live having the best roleplay possible.
Let's face it, people will metagame, so why not have fun with it and cause the metagamers to be pointed out if they try metagaming?
Have fun with it by taking up a normal book and keep a diary? Why not assign people nicknames that sound like a real name and see how people react? While metagaming is against the rules of the game, having habits such as I mentioned is not.
Why not actively show great interest in finding/ helping/ or going against Kira? While this may make you seem to be Shinigami Eyes or the Detective and may cause your death, this can create better/ fun roleplay. Who knows, your actions may result in the outcome your character desired.
Be creative with your character! Are you full of pride thinking yourself better than Kira? Do you want to be a yandere/ tsundere to Kira? Are you a yandere/ tsundere to another character, perhaps even a random character? Just because it is Death Note mode does not mean you can not create your own roleplay with friends! Kira and the Detective's struggle does not need to be your character's focus at all.
Shinigami Eyes - With great power comes great responsibility. If you obtain this role you need to keep in mind every name you give can cause a player's death. It may even cause a character to die the moment you say a name. Therefore, you should never take a name lightly. If anything having been an owner of a Death Note with Shinigami Eyes you know just how much a name means.
Allow people to roleplay! While it is tempting to give every name and cause a full Kira wipe of a round, it's better to avoid this. Why? Because even if this is a metagame reason: Every player has the right to have fun and roleplay. Try to at least allow a player to give you a reason to want them dead before saying a name, or at least have Kira give you reasoning for each name.
Make your own story! Too often the Shinigami Eyes role tends to do the same thing: Treat Kira/ the Detective as just business partners. Give out names, see death, walk off. Why not stir things up? Think to yourself: What does the Shinigami Eyes role want of the night? Why did you give Kira your Death Note? Did you have a bigger goal? Do you want Kira to do something for you in exchange for each name? Do you want to see Kira make a mistake with your Death Note and be brought to justice? Do you have an yandere style interest in Kira? Or, is your character a person who just wants to see death? DEPTH TO A CHARACTER ALWAYS HELPS ROLEPLAY!
Kira/Detective - In your hands both characters know they literally hold the difference between life and death, and as such it is not to be taken lightly. It is always best to have a reason per name you desire to use. Killing without an rp reason to target a person is ALWAYS RK especially if it is with a Death Note. The approach to the Death Note should also differ depending on which role you get.
First of all: Pay attention to which role you have been given if a Death Note spawns in your inventory. I have seen too many rounds where a detective turned around and killed everyone against Kira thinking he is Kira.
The Detective's Death Note - You have been handed the death note under orders: Do not use the Death Note unless it is a last resort. This means, while you hold a valuable tool for killing you should focus on investigating Kira another way. If anything the Death Note you hold should be primarily a guide to how a Death Note operates, such as how much time you have to react if Kira writes in the death note/ so forth, or you could choose to explain to people how it works.
Kira's Death Note - You see yourself as a sort of a judge or an agent of chaos. In your hands you hold the power to kill the guilty so that the innocent may live in peace. Or, you can use it as a tool for deception and chaos. You know you are being chased, by why go out of your way to kill the oen against you? Why not put a well placed kill to start putting pressure on the detective? Perhaps you can make it look as if someone else is Kira or that the detective is killing people to the innocent?
Just know: Killing everyone is never an option. If you do so your character surly would be arrested even if you are the detective who does this. After all, the police knows which students are locked in the school and is aware Kira is among them and even if you are the detective your death note would be inspected to see which names you had been forced to write. As Kira you want to continue using the death note, same goes if you want to be a corrupt detective. So, think rationally of the after effects on what is waiting for you outside.
Motivation and Character :
Regardless of your role I stress again and again to focus more on why you do what you do, and add depth. Do not be afraid to embrace any sort of personality you choose. The goal is not to win, lose, or rush to win or lose. The goal is to have fun. We are here to have fun. Let your individuality shine, role or not, risky character to play or not!
I hope each reader takes something from this thread in order to inspire greater roleplay in the mode many people hesitate to give a chance.
